MOUNT KILIMANJARO

EXPEDITIONS

Lemosho Route Expedition

10 Days / 9 Nights | 5.895 mals / Uhuru Peak

More than a mountain climb, the Lemosho Route is an immersive expedition through one of Africa's most extraordinary natural landscapes. Beginning on the remote western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, this journey offers a gradual ascent across pristine rainforest, open heathlands, alpine deserts, and glacial summits—revealing the remarkable ecological diversity that makes Kilimanjaro a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At Red Ant Films & Expeditions, we believe every expedition should create a meaningful connection with the places we explore. Our Lemosho experience combines expert mountain guiding, responsible expedition practices, and thoughtful interpretation of Kilimanjaro's unique ecosystems, geology, and cultural heritage. Every day on the trail is an opportunity to understand the mountain beyond its famous summit.

The expedition begins at Londorossi Gate before entering the lush Lemosho Forest, where ancient trees shelter colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and an extraordinary diversity of birdlife. As the landscape gradually transforms, hikers cross the spectacular Shira Plateau with panoramic views over Mount Meru and the vast Maasai Steppe, before joining the iconic Southern Circuit through Lava Tower, Barranco Valley, Karanga Camp, and Barafu Camp.

Often regarded as Kilimanjaro's most scenic approach, the Lemosho Route provides excellent acclimatization thanks to its gradual ascent and longer itinerary, significantly improving summit success while allowing travelers to fully appreciate the mountain's ever-changing environments.

Summit day begins long before sunrise as we ascend from Barafu Camp beneath a sky filled with stars, reaching Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)—the highest point in Africa. Watching the first light illuminate glaciers, volcanic landscapes, and endless horizons is a moment few will ever forget.

This expedition is designed for adventurous travelers seeking more than a destination. It is a journey of resilience, discovery, conservation, and respect for one of the world's greatest mountains—guided with authenticity, responsibility, and the storytelling spirit that defines every Red Ant expedition.

Machame Wilderness Expedition

8 Days / 7 Nights | A Journey Through Kilimanjaro's Living Landscapes

The Machame Route is more than a climb to Africa's highest summit—it is an expedition through the living heart of Mount Kilimanjaro. Designed for adventurous travelers seeking challenge, breathtaking scenery, and meaningful encounters with nature, this eight-day journey follows one of the mountain's most spectacular and rewarding routes.

At Red Ant Films & Expeditions, every ascent is an opportunity to experience Kilimanjaro beyond the summit. Our expeditions embrace responsible travel, expert mountain leadership, and a deep appreciation for the mountain's extraordinary ecosystems, geology, and cultural significance. The destination is important, but the journey is what truly transforms the experience.

Beginning at Machame Gate, the trail winds through ancient montane rainforest alive with towering trees, endemic plants, colorful birdlife, and playful black-and-white colobus monkeys. As the expedition gains altitude, dense forest gradually gives way to giant heather, volcanic moorlands, and the dramatic alpine desert, revealing an ever-changing landscape unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Following Kilimanjaro's renowned Southern Circuit, the route passes through iconic landmarks including Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, the majestic Barranco Valley, Karanga Camp, and Barafu Camp. This carefully planned progression allows trekkers to acclimatize naturally while enjoying some of the mountain's most dramatic scenery—from towering volcanic cliffs to sweeping views across the Maasai Steppe and Mount Meru.

The final ascent begins before dawn from Barafu Camp. Guided beneath a canopy of stars, climbers reach Stella Point as the first light touches the glaciers before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point on the African continent. Standing above the clouds at sunrise is not simply a personal achievement—it is a reminder of the resilience, humility, and wonder that great expeditions inspire.

The Machame Wilderness Expedition is created for those who value authentic adventure, responsible exploration, and unforgettable storytelling. Every step supports our philosophy of traveling with purpose, respecting the mountain's fragile environment, and forging a genuine connection with one of the world's most iconic natural landscapes.
